Sophie Bard is an illustrator and textile design consultant and lecturer working between London and Nottingham. Her specialist area is within printed textiles with significant focus on drawing and complex digital rendering.
A lot of Sophie’s inspiration comes from her knowledge of historical patterns such as Chintz and Art Nouveau, creating feminine motifs of flora and fauna with a graphic twist. Artists such as Escher, Beardsley and Dali are of great influence as surrealist ideas feed into personal design concepts to juxtapose feminine and natural imagery.
Colourful ink washes, digital painting, intricate pigment pen marks, smooth vectors, lomography and DSLR photographs, complex layer masks, magic markers, metallic painting, oily image treatments, and experimental scanning techniques are just a few of the processes and media that Sophie uses to create her magical patterns and illustrations, resulting a rich and colourful visual language.
Constantly drawing from a young age in her Grandpa’s artist studio, her childhood was also wash of inspiration from the many overseas trips, travelling around countries such as India, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel, Europe, the US and many more. This early exploration developed intrigue for the unfamiliar and has subsequently resulted in an open-minded approach towards her practise both in terms of concept and technique.
With her experience in the fashion print industry Sophie has sold to many international and high profile clients such as Paul Smith, Victoria’s Secret, Ted Baker, Topshop, Macy’s, and many more. Her textile designs have also been featured in a styled Windows 7 advert published in both Vogue and Grazia. See below to view her full client list.
